According to the internet, "MICE is an acronym for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions. It refers to a specialized niche of group tourism dedicated to planning, booking
and facilitating conferences, seminars and other events.”
Now why might hotels in the Indian Ocean be equipped for this type of tourism and why would they be featured in a
sustainable tourism programme such as the Rainbow?
The answer is simple: the Indian Ocean is indeed located in a strategic position and easy to reach from Asia, Africa, the Arab countries and Europe alike. Hotels throughout the islands have recognised at an early stage the importance of catering to the growing needs of the industry. This is partly due to the fact that there were, up until recently, no facilities for the participants of political and cultural inter-island events, sports games and business meetings.
Being the only large buildings on many islands besides the airport, local hotels have therefore
created the possibility of hosting not only tourists, but also catering for business people and providing all the facilities needed to make their stay a successful one.
As MICE involves the planning of corporate meetings, convention organisation, the provision of conference centres, food and beverage management, logistics, tours and transfers; organisation by a local company is a must.
And since companies increasingly tend toward a holistic approach, their MICE-event might best take place under the umbrella of the Rainbow, where sustainability and respect for nature are included in the basic arrangement.
